Heavy Metal Tolerance in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an aerobic, non-fermentative Gram-negative bacterium widespread in the environment. S. maltophilia Sm777 exhibits innate resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents. Furthermore, this bacterium tolerates high levels (0.1 to 50 mM) of various toxic metals, such as Cd, Pb, Co, Zn, Hg, Ag, selenite, tellurite and uranyl. S. maltophilia Sm777 was able to grow in the ...

To the Editor: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen, especially in debilitated and immunocompro-mised persons (1). However, comparatively little is known of the epidemiology of this bacterium, and sources and routes of transmission of S. mal-tophilia are not well understood. The bacterium is widely distributed in the environment, including in plant rhi-zo...
متن کاملReassessment of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia phenotype.
Standard microbiology references describe Stenotrophomonas maltophilia as oxidase negative and variable with respect to utilization of lactose and sucrose. Analysis of a collection of 766 S. maltophilia isolates indicated that approximately 20% are oxidase positive and that this species should be reevaluated for other phenotypes, including oxidative fermentation of lactose and sucrose.

BACKGROUND Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a seldom-reported pathogen in ocular infections. The report describes six cases of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (S. maltophilia) keratitis and scleritis. To our knowledge, this is the foremost report of S. maltophilia scleritis. METHODS Laboratory reports of patients diagnosed with S. maltophilia ocular infections were collected from the ophthalmic d...
متن کاملAcral necrosis by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.
BACKGROUND Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (SM) has been considered a nosocomial pathogen. Nevertheless, community acquired infection may occur more frequently than usually recognized. CASE We describe distal necrosis of the fingers by SM in a farmer, contracted in the community and successfully treated with a combination of cotrimoxazole and ciprofloxacin. The patient was diagnosed with chronic...
